I-Beam Robot
For my final project in Stanford's ME104 Mechanical Systems Design, my team and I designed, modeled, and planned on testing an I-beam climbing robot before COVID-19 kept us from finishing the project. We instead gained valuable experience performing hand calculations, failure analysis, and CAD modeling using stock components without ever actually testing a prototype or completed mechanical system. It was quite disappointing that our in-person classes were cut short just before the final week of testing and building the robot, but in industry, a designer may sometimes have to design a system entirely on paper or a computer without ever actually making a physical prototype for testing. The project taught me about working with a team of designers and engineers to accomplish a common goal while testing my ability to conceptualize and analyze mechanical components through hand calculations, FEA simulations, and highly-refined CAD models.
